This website has been created using the best information available to GARD at the time of its compilation. The opinions expressed are based on GARD’s perception of the issues involved and the stance taken by Thames Water with regard to their proposal to build an Abingdon Reservoir. The views expressed in this website, which GARD reserves the right to change ahead of the Inquiry, cannot necessarily be taken, therefore, in whole or in part to represent GARD’s position at that Inquiry.

TAKE ACTION

Individuals who are opposed to Thames Water's Abingdon reservoir proposals can add to the weight of public opinion against the Plan without needing specialist knowledge.

1 Join our e-newsletter – Please fill in this form and join our campaign to stop Thames Water’s plans. Sign-up for our e-newsletter to keep up to date with our progress.

2 Sign our petition – Please sign our petition to stop Thames Water’s plans! We will also keep you informed with our campaign progress.

3 Follow us on Twitter – Keep up to date with our progress by following the GARD Campaign on Twitter.

4 Find us on Facebook – Show your support by joining our Facebook group and keep up to date with our campaign.

5 Join GARD – membership is only £1 a year or £5 for life. GARD is opposing the reservoir on mainly technical grounds, and proposing substantially better options. See “Contact” button.

6 Encourage your friends to join GARD. Too many people hope others will fight the battle for them, but we need to involve many more of our local population, including those living in West Abingdon (vulnerable to flooding).

7 Volunteer to assist with recruitment in your area to demonstrate the local feeling.

8 Inform GARD of any details, complaints or other information which might be of use in fighting Thames Water's reservoir proposals. Their record of dealing with landowners during works in Steventon on the pipeline across the village two years ago, which caused widespread mess and flooding and over-ran by a year, is an example. If we cannot trust Thames Water to carry out a smaller project properly we certainly should be suspicious of a major project.

9 Write to your MP, the Abingdon Herald or other local newspapers to express your concern about how the project would affect you. These might range from dam breach risk, increased flooding risks, sub-surface water movement, disruption during the 10 year construction period, dust, noise, traffic, increased rail traffic causing longer delays at crossings, compulsory purchase and loss of livelihood and homes, workers camps, loss of good agricultural land and other environment effects, and after completion a vastly changed landscape and much recreational traffic.

10 Ensure your MP and District Councillor is aware of your concerns, similarly your Parish Councillors.
